George Washington Freeman, the youngest child of Nathniel Freeman and Tryphosa Colton, began studying for the ministry by teaching in private schools. In a series of moves, he took on more responsibilities in the Episcopal church. He "was elected rector of Christ Church, Raleigh" in 1829 and served there until 1840. Differences between his more Purtanical views and the congregation caused a gradual separation. He went to other churches and eventually was consecrated as bishop in 1844 at St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia. He was serving as missionary bishop to Arkansas and the Indian Territory when he died in Little Rock, Arkansas.[1]
