Biography

Samuel Mills was born 1795/1796. [1][2][3]

He was the son of Samuel Mills Esq (of Turnings, County Kildare) & Charlotte Adair (based on matching name and residence).

He resided Turnings. [1][4]

He was an Esquire. [4]

He was the brother of:

  • Charles Mills of Little Rath. [4]
  • John Mills. Died 1826. [1]

In 1821 he was High Sheriff of County Kildare (same as his grandfather was). [5]

In 1830 he was elected to the Kildare (fox) Hunt Club. [6][7]

In 1831 he married Anne Maunsell.[8] Her family owned more land than the Mills' did.[9]

In 1833 he was recorded paying tithe (tax) on his agricultural produce to the Church of Ireland. [10]

In 1839 he was recorded leasing land[11], some of which was due to have 800 metres of railroad built upon it.[12][13]

In 1841, after ten years of marriage, his eldest son, Samuel Mills, was born.

Samuel died aged 73, Turnings 07 June 1869. [2][3][4][14][15][16]

Samuel's gravestone was 6 feet in height. It broke in to more than six pieces.

Research Notes

Another fox hunter appearing on the list was John Mills Foster of Killibegs[6], which is 10km west of Turnings. Was this a son of one of Samuel's aunts?

In 1833, one of the residents of Turnings was Robert Atkinson.[10] Robert's grandson, Arthur Atkinson, was so enamoured with the new railroad that he emigrated to the USA to work on the railroads there.
