Notes

Note N764John T. Jones was born on February 28, 1785 in Virginia, the son of John Jones and Elizabeth Ann Pettypool. Sometime between 1785 - 1790, John's father moved the family to Rutherford County, North Carolina, where he is listed in the 1790 census as having five white persons in his household and no slaves.

Around 1806 John T. Jones married Mary Southerland in North Carolina. She was a native of Burke County, North Carolina, which bordered Rutherford County to the north-east.

In April of 1806, John Jones (along with Elijah Jones) was assigned to a road docket in Rutherford County, North Carolina to work on the public road from Moores Mill on Sandy Run to Turners Mill on Beaver Dam Creek. Two years later, in another road docket in January 1808 the court appointed John as the overseer of the public road in the room and place of Sterling Jones.

At the time of the 1810 census, John was living in Rutherford County, North Carolina, with three males and two females listed as being members of the household. John did not own slaves at this time.

John is listed in the Rutherford County, North Carolina deed book on March 22, 1811, where he is the recipient of 1,500 dollars and all of the goods, household stuff, implements and furniture (including a Negro woman age 62 and four other negroes: Lany (4), Mimy (21), Oliver (3) and Prince (6 months old) from his father, John Jones Sr.; he also recieved 4 head of horse, 9 head of cattle, 7 head of sheep, 6 head of hogs, 2 cupboards, 4 featherbed, miscellaneous other furniture and all of the cupboard furniture. Later that year, on November 1, 1811, John is again the recipient of 25 dollars and 165 acres on main Broad River joining Miller and Walker from his father, John Jones Sr.

On July 4, 1817, John made this statement: "I John Jones, Junr, in consideration of 00 paid by John Jones, Senr. have bargained, sold unto John Jones, Senr. all household furniture, implements and other personal property, negroes, Viz: one negro woman named Lucy age about 68, another named Minsa 21 years of age, another named Alice about 9 years old, another named Prince about 6 years old and Joseph one year old, four horses, 9 cattle, 7 sheep, 6 head of hogs, and a certain tenement in Rutherford County late in occupation of John Jones Junr. I will warrant and forever defend all lawful claims on said property." It was witnessed by Lemuel Morre, Jurat, Edmond Jones. S/John Jones. This transaction was recorded in July 1817 in the Court of Rutherford County, North Carolina.

In October of 1817 John, along with Edmond Jones were qualified as executors of Sterling Jones' estate in Rutherford County, North Carolina, after his last will and testament had been proved in open court earlier that month.

On September 15, 1819, in Rutherford County, North Carolina, John was left an equal share of the estate of his father per the will of John Jones Sr.

Sometime between September 1819 and May 1820 John moved his family to Jackson County, Alabama, where his daughter Elizabeth was born on May 4, 1820.

In November 1821, the Mud Creek Association of Primitive Baptists was organized on the third Saturday of the month. Among the Blue Spring delegates was John.

At the time of the 1830 census, John resided with his family in Jackson County, Alabama, where he is listed as having six males and three females in his household. John was not listed as owning any slaves at the time.

On May 10, 1831, the Hunstville, Madison, Alabama Land Office issued a Land Patent to John for 80 acres in Section 18, Township 5, Range 4E.

At the time of the 1840 census, John was still living in Jackson County, Alabama with his family. His household consisted of five males and two females, as well as four male and three female slaves, ranging in age from childhood to adulthood.

the time of the 1850 census, John was 64 years old and was still living in Jackson County, Alabama with his wife Mary (61) and their children, William (20) and Jesse (14). John was working as a farmer, with the value of his real estate estimated at ,600.

John is also listed in the 1850 Agricultural census as owning:

60 acres of improved land.
100 acres of unimproved land.
,600 (cash value of farm).
' (value of farm implements/machinery).
4 (value of livestock).

In the fall of 1853, sixty-eight year old John Jones as he had first done in the late summer of 1817, prepared to leave his home and travel to an unknown but promising land. The rising cost of acreage in Jackson County, Alabama had made it impossible for his many sons and daughters to remain close, so the aging patriarch sold his land and, along with wife Mary and young sons William Clay and Jess E. commenced the trip west. Accompanying them were the families of married sons, Allen, Hosea, and David Jones, and daughters Mary Lucinda McCutchen and Sarah Beasley. A descendant of William Clay Jones, Jack D. Jones, relates that "the journey took about three months and they traveled in ox-drawn wagons".

On January 29, 1854, John purchased 553.5 acres of land from Ethelred and Elizabeth Tarver for ,000 in Cherokee County, Texas. Later that year, on April 29, 1854, John Jones purchased 320 acres from Philip and Martha Alston. A log cabin was built on the property by John's slaves. (Note: This cabin, still in livable condition, and most of the original 320 acre tract is still owned in 2008 by descendants of John Jones' sons William Clay and Jesse.

March 8, 1856, John deeded to his son Hosea for ,086 part of a tract 4 1/2 miles north-west of the town of Rusk (of the Beverly Pool headright league of land). John had sold the 553.5 acre tract to his son Hosea, but kept the 320 acre track.

March 18, 1857, John made out his will; leaves to wife Mary Jones...David Jones, Margaret Jones now Nevels...Elijah Jones...Hosea Jones...Berryman Jones' heirs...Sarah Jones now Sarah Beesly...Elisabeth Willson..Allin Jones...John Jones...William Jones...Mary Jones now McCutchin..and Jesse R. Jones. (Note: Two children, Hannah/Frances by 1830 and Edmond by 1840 were deceased and not mentioned in the will.).

April 28, 1857, John T. Jones died at his home in Cherokee County, Texas at the age of 72. He was buried in the Jones Family Cemetery a hundred yards from the cabin.

John's estate was valued at ,000. His wife inherited all of his estate. He stipulated that at his wife's death the slaves were to be sold, except the old woman Huldy, and the money divided among his children. The homestead was divided between two of their sons, Jesse and William Clay, at the death of Mary in 1865 as stipulated in John's will.

The Jones Cemetery is located between Highway 69 south of Jacksonville, Texas and FM 347, between Dialville and Oakland.
