He served in the American Civil War, enlisting on 29 July 1863 at Hartland, Niagara, New York. He was assigned to the 76th New York Infantry Regiment, Company G, as a Private.
Sadly he was taken prisoner at the battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on 5 May 1864. After he was transported via rail car to the new prison in Andersonville, Georgia, the family did not hear directly from him again. However, his wife Frances did receive letters from the wife of Captain Griggs Holbrook, his comrade and fellow prisoner at Andersonville.
His wife heard no news of her captured husband for months, as fast and reliable news was so hard to come by for families with relatives in POW camps. It wasn't until she got a letter from Mrs. Holbrook that she found out he had died on 4 August 1864 in Prison. Cause of death was officially recorded as Diarrhea chronic.
He was buried at Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville National Historic Site, Macon County, Georgia[1]. PLOT: Row: 4576
