Biography

This profile is part of the Flower Name Study.

Son of Sir William Flower (1609-1662). Captain Henry Flower was born abt 1634 in Whitwell, England. His Baptism was on Aug 19th of that year so using that as a birth date for the present. He was married to Joan Purnell in abt 1656 in England. They had 5 known children born in England between 1658 and 1670:[1]

  1. Lamrock b1658
  2. Elizabeth b1659
  3. John b1666
  4. Francis b1668
  5. Ann b1670

Lamrock's father's name on his baptismal record is Henry, but many sources have William's son Henry as a Lt-Col. in the British Army, marrying Ann Hewtry, and having no heirs.[2]

Please fix this profile. This Henry Flower was not from the Whitwell family who moved to Ireland.. He lived in Somerset. There is no evidence that he went to Hartford, Conn. Find a Grave is helpful, but not a primary source.

To Felix regarding my grandfather, Lamrock Flower - I could not agree with you more.

The Flower Family of Chepstow, Wales and the many "Lamrock" Flowers of Gloucester and Somerset counties seems to me to be the key to the origins of my great grandparents.

Please see note already added to Sir William Flower (Flower-610) further to this Henry does not seem to be of this Flower family (& was probably mistakenly added to the pedigree due to being in Ireland) Henry was a Parliamentary officer in Fleetwood's Regiment of Foot ( and is very possibly the same Henry who was earlier in the Coventry regiment of horse.) He can be located as a soldier in Ireland in the 1650/60's (& in Skipper's Lane, Dublin in the 1659 census of Ireland.) He is not Sir William Flower's son & unlikely to be the father of children born in Somerset.

Re: his 'son' Lamrock is a very rare name & I don't expect the Lamarocks in Somerset are a coincidence. The 1st documented in Combe Hay in 1579. The Flowers appear to have been in this area for some time prior to this.

You'really right Lisa. Henry Flower at Ireland is not the same as the one mentioned in Ireland.

There are about a dozen Lamrock Flowers in either Somerset or Gloucester in England. The Flowers at Chepstow, Wales arrived there from the Somerset area of England. The Henry Flower I'm looking at is at Chew ton Mendip, Somerset, England. I found the baptismal record of, what I believe, Henry Flower. I have been in correspondence with a Flower family in Gloucester. They have the same issue. Finding "The" Henry Flower related directly to Lamrock Flower of 1579 at Comb Hay Parish there in England. If my 8 times great grandfather was born around 1660, as has been stated many times, the best result was the baptismal record I've published. The original Lamrock was centered at Saltford, England. For me, thats the beginning of my search for my grandfather, Henry Flower. There's always been great speculation about the Irish peerage connected to my family. Thanks to you, that's been confirmed. Just because my genealogy resources said, Captain William Flower was the father of Lamrock Flower of Hartford, Connecticut, doesn't make it so. Thank you for your efforts. All The Best, Patrick Flower
