Carrie was probably born in Jul 1856 in Erie County, Pennsylvania and somehow ended up in Michigan, where she lived from 1873 until her husband's unexpected death in 1903. Shortly afterward, she and her son, Ernie, left for Montana, where she is found in 1910. She died on 28 Jan 1912 in Deer Lodge, Montana.
Research Notes
Carrie first appears on record as "Carrie Linsey", on the marriage record between herself and Christopher McClain in 1873.
Carrie's parents are unknown. On her death record, her son listed her father's name as Henry Eldridge. Various census records give conflicting birth locations of her father, who was probably born in either Pennsylvania or Wisconsin. Her mother was probably born in Pennsylvania.
Some records list her maiden name as Eldredge and some list it as Lindsey. It is unlikely she was married more than once, as she was reportedly 17 years old when she married Christopher McClain in 1873. Thus, it is possible she was adopted or raised by a different family than her birth parents.
Her headstone gives a birth date of 14 Jul 1840, but this is strongly conflicts with every other record of her. She was likely born in July, sometime between 1854 and 1856.

Mrs. Carrie McLean died Sunday night at her home in this city. Death was due to asthma and kindred troubles. She came here nearly four years ago from the east in the hope that a change of climate would be beneficial. Mrs. McLean was born in Erie, Pa., July 14, 1856. She was married to Christopher Y. McLean thirty-eight years ago at Grand Rapids, Mich. He was a soldier in the civil war and a member of Co. E 7th Michigan cavalry, serving three years. Mrs. McLean leaves four children, two daughters and two sons. Henry lives at Alberton and Ernest lived with his mother in this city. Those who knew Mrs. McLean speak very kindly of her as a noble and generous woman. The funeral was held this afternoon from the Presbyterian church, the pastor Rev. David Oastler officiating, assisted by the members of the choir. It was largely attended by the neighbors. Her daughters were not present, it being impossible for them to arrive here in time.
Larceny Case
It appears Carrie was tried for larceny after taking somebody's banjo.
Published in the Anaconda Recorder and New Northwest, 24 Jul 1896:[7]
Wenesday, July 22.
State of Montana vs. Carrie Lindsay; for larceny; appealed from justice court at Anaconda. The jury decided that the taking of the property (a banjo) by defendant was not larceny but under the claim of right and acquitted. The jury was then discharged and court adjourned until Monday next.
