Biography

James Madison Hawkins was born June 14, 1814, to Elijah Hawkins (1771-1851), and Sarah Salley Dudley (1775-1862), in Holderness, Grafton, New Hampshire. [1][2]

On January 18, 1836, James and Lucy Barret were married in Hartland, Vermont. Lucy Barrett was born Dec. 18, 1811, to William Barrett and Anna Denison, in Hartland, Vermont. After Lucy's death in 1851, the Civil War brought James to join the Union Army.[3] On May 1, 1852, James married his second wife, Abilene Tourtellotte, born July 29, 1831, in Leon, Cattaraugus, New York. Abilene is the daughter of Frederick Tourtellotte (1804–1872), and Charlotte F. Temple (1806–1890).

From 1850-1870, he lived in Waupun, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.[4] [5] [6]

In 1852, James, at age 37, married a young 20 year old Abeline Tourtellotte in in Waupun, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. (No sources found yet, timeline based on birth of first child Ida Erminda).

In 1874, James lived in Auburn, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. [7]

In 1885, James lived in Carsonville, Becker, Minnesota.[8] Unsure of the timline, James owned land in Belmont, Portage, Wisconsin. [9][10]

Military

James fought in the Civil War, enlisting in the Union Army, on May 23, 1864, in Oconto, Wisconsin, in the 39th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry, Heavy Artillery, Company H, Rank of Private (100 Days Men, 1864), and mustered out September 22, 1964.[11][12][13]

The 39th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Washburn in Milwaukee and mustered in on June 3, 1864. From Milwaukee the regiment moved to Memphis, Tennessee, between June 13-17, 1864.[14][15]


Burial

James [16], Lucy [17], and Abiline [18], are buried in the East Ladoga Cemetary in Ladoga Cemetery, Waupun, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.[19] [20]
