Biography

Garnet was born on 21 December 1897 in Cambridge.[1] As of 1900, he was living with his family at 77 Broadway in Cambridge.[2] As of 1910, he was living with his father, siblings, grandparents, and Aunt Christina at 78 Thorndike Street in Cambridge and attending school.[3] As of 1918, he was living at 88 Fourth Street in Cambridge and working at the Canney Transfer Company at 50 Clinton Street in Boston. At that time, he had blue eyes, light hair, and was a medium height.[4] As of January 1920, following his service during World War I, he was living with his father, step-mother, half-siblings, his sister Georgiana, and Georgiana's family at 24 Kensington Avenue in Somerville and working as an express wagon driver, probably with his father.[5]

He married Elizabeth Sheehan on 9 February 1920 at St. Mary's Church in Cambridge. George Cunningham of Somerville was his best man. They honeymooned in Atlantic City and came to reside at 121 Glen Street in Somerville.[6][7][8][9][10] As of 1928, he was living at 20 Prospect hill Avenue in Somerville.[11] As of 1930, he was living with his family at 30 Stone Avenue in Somerville and working as a police officer.[12] As of 1940, he was living at 79 Columbus Avenue in Somerville with his family.[13] The family had moved to 96 Putnam Road in Somerville by 1942.[14]

Garnet had a ninth grade education. As of 1940, he was earning an income of $2,184, and in the week before the Census, he worked about 54 hours.[15] As of 1942, his home could be reached by phone at Somerset 1175. He was about 5 foot 8 and weighed 190 pounds. He had blond hair, blue eyes, and a "ruddy" complexion.[16]

Garnet served with the US Army on the Mexican border during World War I, after enlisting on 24 July 1918 and arriving at Fort Devens just after the deployment of most of the Fort's troops to fight in France. He was discharged on 11 December 1918. In World War II, he enlisted on 4 January 1943 and served with the US Coast Guard for three years, including at a station near Dennis.[17][18][19][20] Garnet was appointed to the Somerville Police Department on 8 October 1925 by Mayor John M. Webster, and he spent a number of years performing day cruising duty. In 1928, he shot himself in the leg, just below the knee.[21]Later, he was unanimously elected as the youngest president of the Somerville Police Relief Association after fewer than a dozen years in the department. After returning from his service during World War II in 1946, he was assigned to plain clothes duty and served as an investigating officer assigned to the Somerville Licensing Comission. Following his retirement from the department in 1952, upon which he was noted as "one of Somerville's most popular police officers," patrolling the day route in the Winter Hill section of Somerville and performing traffic duty for the children at St Ann's Parochial School,[22] he was a security officer at MIT Laboratories.[23] He ran for Alderman-at-Large in 1953 and received 2,378 votes.[24] As of 1960, he was living with his wife at 12A Sterling Street.[25]

He passed away on 6 April 1960 at 9:25pm at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston of lymphoblastoma, of which he had suffered for four months. Funeral services were held on 11 April 1960 at E.L. Kelleher Funeral Home and in St. Polycarp's Church in Somerville, attended by a group of veterans and Somerville Police, headed by Chief Thomas J. O'Brien. His bearers were members of the police department. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.[26][27][28][29]
