Biography

Charlotte Hobeau was a native Indian (Asian) whos birth name was changed ('westernised') on her first marriage; this was usual in this period of India's history, under the rule of the British. Charlotte was born about May 1801 (as recorded on her tombstone). Charlotte Hobeau married three times, following the death of each of her husbands; again this was usual, widows often married best friends of their deceased husbands. Marriage between British servicemen and native women was encouraged at the time. Charlotte died on 14 September 1831, and was buried in the Old Protestant Cemetery Bangalore, Karnataka, India, followed by her third husband, Thomas Avery, 17 July 1833. Charlotte had at least six children, to Geroge Flynn her first husband, Stephen Coyle, and Thomas Avery her last husband.
