Thomas was born on September 25, 1927 at Helenwood in Scott County, Tennessee. He was the son of A.Y. Phillips and Frona Bernice ( Phillips ) Phillips . Thomas passed away from rheumatic heart disease and myocardial insufficiency on December 29, 1939 at Helenwood.

The birth date on Thomas's head stone should read 1927, instead of 1827.
