John (Baldewyn) Baldwin was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

John Baldwin (alias Baldewyn) was born in 1838 at Aylesbury, England. His father may have been John Baldwin; however, his mother is not known at this time.

Family

John had an elder brother, William, who became his heir after their father died. He married Edith, mentioned as his 'relict' in his will. There were no children from this union. There is no further information about Edith.

Career

John Baldwin had a legal career in London as a bencher [1]of Gray's Inn and held the office of Common Searjeant of London.[2][3]

Death and Burial

John Baldwin (alias Baldewyn) died on 10 April 1469 in about his 31st year at London, and was buried in the Church of the Grey Friar's in London, which later was occupied by the Christ's Hospital, better known as the "Blue Coat School."[4] The Sepulchral [5]Inscription in the Church (in Latin) read:[6]

---"Johes Baldewyn quod socii de Greys inne [fvies] cois ciuitate Lond et fidelis depoisitor [sic] hui quet; ob. 10 Apr 1469."

---"John Baldewyn with the associates of the Grays Inne [fvies] with the city of London and faithful depositor [sic] here; ob. 10 Apr 1469."

John Baldwin's date of death is wrongly listed in the above source as 10 April 1469. His will was not made until 2 June 1469.

Probate Record

The earliest Baldwin will preserved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (court where the majority of wills for the country were proved) is that of John Baldewyn which was dated the 2 June 1469 and proved on 21 July 1469 by his relict Edith. John died childless; he bequeathed all his lands and tenements in the County of Bucks, to his brother William.[7][8]

40 shillings for the repair of their church to the the Friars Minor
Probate 21 July of the year aforesaid.

Research Notes

  • The above John Baldwin (alias Baldewyn), brother William, and William's sons Richard and John Baldwin should NOT be confused or conflated with other Baldwins who lived at Buckinghamshire during these years.
  • The Baldwins of Buckinghamshire (i.e., "Richard of Dundridge" and "John of the Hale" whose descendants traveled to the colonies are likely related to the above Baldwins; however, the connection is not known at this time. Further genealogical research and records are needed.
