John Norman Stuart Buchan, 2nd Baron Tweedsmuir was born on 25 November 1911. He was the son of John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir and Susan Charlotte Grosvenor.
He married, firstly, Priscilla Jean Fortescue Thomson, Baroness Tweedsmuir of Belhelvie, daughter of Brigadier Alan Fortescue Thomson and Edythe Mary Unwin, on 27 July 1948.
He married, secondly, Jean Margherita Tollemache, daughter of Captain Humphrey Douglas Tollemache and Elsie Violet Raphael, in 1980.
He died on 20 June 1996 at age 84.
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire. He graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire in 1933 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).
He was Assistant District Officer between 1934 and 1936 at Uganda. He was with the Hudson Bay Company service between 1937 and 1939. He fought in the Second World War. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Tweedsmuir, of Elsfield, Oxford [U.K., 1935] on 11 February 1940. He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Hastings and Price Edward Regiment in 1943. He was invested as a Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1945. He held the office of Lord Rector of Aberdeen University between 1948 and 1951. He wrote the book Hudson Bay Trader, published 1951. He wrote the book Always a Countryman, published 1953. He was decorated with the award of the Canadian Forces Decoration (C.D.) in 1964. He was invested as a Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1964. He wrote the book One Man's Happiness.
