Charles Read McIlwaine was born 1 Oct 1896 in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States.^[1][2] His father was Clement Read McIlwaine and his mother was Henrie Whiting Lumsden.^[1]

In the 1900 US census, Charles R Mcilwaine (4), listed as born Oct 1895 in Tennessee, was living in Knoxville, Tennessee with his parents Clement R Mcilwaine (40) and Henrie W Mcilwaine (32), and his siblings Henry (10), Elizabeth (9), Richard (6) and Archibald (0). His aunt Marie Whiting (36) and a servant Annie Pannel (14) were also living with them.^[3]

He married Alice Wells Gillespie.^[2]

Charles died 19 Sept 1972. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, USA. (Plot: Section 2, "new cemetery").
