Biography

Dr Joshua Griggs was born on June 17, 1769, in Tolland, Connecticut. His parents were Deacon Joshua Griggs and Joanna Chapman. His siblings who were all also born in Tolland were:

1. Roswell Griggs (1767-1832)
2. Susanna Griggs Kellogg (1771-1832)
3. Daniel Griggs (1773-1852)
4. Charles Griggs (1775-)
5. Sarah Griggs Howard (1777-1851)
6. Elijah Griggs (1780-1839)
7. Joanna Griggs Bump (1783-1841)^[1]

Dr. Joshua Griggs came early, about 1810 and lived at Stephentown “Flats,” where William Chevevoy lives. He was a surgeon in the 5th Regiment during the Revolutionary War. He died in town, at at the age of 43 and is buried in the Baptist Cemetery. (died 1/6/1813. He married Nancy)^[2]

He married Annis Nancy Stearns in 1792. They had six children. They were:

1. Sophronia Griggs Bogue or Booge (1792-1877)
2. Laura Griggs Peckham (1793-1869)
3. Unknown male Griggs (1796-)
4. Harriet Maria Griggs Doty (1800-)
5. Julia Ann Griggs (1803-1841)
6. Edwin Eugene Griggs (1808-)^[3]

Dr Griggs moved to Stephentown in the 1790's.^[4] He was a surgeon in the 5th Regiment during the Revolutionary War.^[5]

The 1800 Census shows Joshua living in Stephentown with his wife, 1 boy under 10 years old (unknown male), and 3 girls under 10 (Sophronia, Laura, and Harriet).^[6]

The 1810 Census shows Joshua living in Stephentown with his wife, 1 boy under 10 (Edwin), 1 boy 10-15 (unknown male), 3 girls under 10 (Harriet, Julia and unknown female) and 1 girl 16-25, (Laura).^[7]

Joshua Griggs died on January 6, 1813, in Stephentown, New York, at the age of 43, and was buried there in the Baptist Cemetery called Stephentown Cemetery.^[8][9]

Dr Griggs died intestate at the age of 43 and his wife Nancy Griggs was appointed executor of his estate.^[10]
