Biography

Ann was born about 1748.[1]

Ann's death date is unknown.

There are two dozen "Ann Smiths" that died in England at this time period. Need proof, that of these dozens, one is our Ann (Pierce) Smith.

Still trying to verify this family.

__________

Children of Ann Pierce and Arthur Smith:[2]

  • 1. Mary Holland Smith born ca. 1770, Bladen Co., N.C. Married James Corbett, Sr.
  • 2. John Smith (ca. 1772-1815) married Mary Ann.
  • 3. Jesse Smith (ca. 1775-1852), married Mary Pauline Lucas (1781-1868).[3] [4]
  • 4. Stephen W. Smith (ca. 1775-1835), married Tereby Pheraby.
  • 5. Rhoda (Rhody) Smith (1782-1864), married Jesse William Gibbs, Sr.
  • 6. Elias Smith (ca. 1789-1860), married Elisabeth.

__________

Arthur Smith's wife appears to be listed in the 1800 Bladen Co., N.C. Census. (Age 45 and up.) Is this lady, Ann Pierce?

Arthur Smith, in the 1810 Sumter Co., S.C. Census, does not have a wife listed. Did Ann Pierce die before 1810?

Bogue Swamp on the Map of Short & Beers' lands... 1887. By Melton Campbell:[5]

  • Columbus County, North Carolina.
  • A readable fantastic map.
  • A few names on this map are:
  • Bogue Swamp. Appears to be where Arthur Smith's children were born.(?)
  • Hiers of Jonathan Pierce.
  • George Pierce.
  • Jim Pierce.
  • J. S. Pierce
  • Council Heirs.
  • Mrs. Smith (two properties). Who is Mrs. Smith?
  • Smith Branch.
  • Palmetto Branch.
  • Kaintuck Island.

__________

1790 Bladen County, North Carolina Census:[6]

  • p. 67- William Stuckey and family.
  • p. 67- Drury Smith and family. (There is a Drury in the 1800 Sampson Co. Census.)
  • p. 67- Benj. Smith and family.
  • p. 67- James Smith & family. (There is a James Smith's Deed, Dec. 17, 1796, shows land- In Lucas's near Burnt Bay, Bladen County, N. C.) A Burnt Bay is about 45 miles from Bogue Swamp, where Arthur Smith had land. In those days, 45 miles had to be a long distance. Trying to identify Arthur Smith's brothers.[7]
  • p. 70- Lucy Smith and family.
  • p. 71- Richard Singletary and family. (Three Richard Singletary families in this census.)[8]
  • p. 71- Mrs. Mary Council and family. (Is this Mary (Robeson) Council- wife of James Council?)
  • p. 72- John Gibbs and family.
  • p. 72- Eley Smith and family. Who is Eley? (There is a Ivey Smith in the 1790 Duplin Co., N. C. census.)
  • p. 72- James Council and family. This appears to be James Council, Jr. He married Mary Robeson. His father Capt. James Council Sr. died about 1789.
  • p. 74 William Ellis and family. (See James Smith deed July 12, 1794.)

.....

  • p. 72- Anne Smith (This appears to be Joanna Council 1753-1833, the wife of Samuel Stephen Smith- died July 2, 1784. ) (See Johana Smith in 1800 Bladen Co., Capt. Powells Dist. also.) See Deed of Stephen Smith, on Bogue, Dec. 12, 1778.[9]
  • two males under 16.
  • one more female.
  • Total people in household- 4
  • Plus 5 slaves.

Eley Smith, James Council, Junior?, and Anne Smith are listed next to each other (1790 census). This Anne or Joanna (Council) Smith is the daughter of Capt. James Council Sr. and Joanna Willis.

Wonder if Samuel Stephen Smith (1746-1784) is the brother of Arthur Smith?

The children of Samuel Stephen Smith and Joanna (Anne) Council (1753-1833) are: John, Sophia, James, Daniel, Stephen, and Elizabeth, born 1784 (married Jonathan Pierce).

.....

  • p. 74- William Burney and family.[10]
  • p. 75- Sol Smith and family.
  • p. 76- Simon Smith and family.
  • p. 79- Burrel Hairgroves and family. Burrel listed on John Smith's deed and Stephen's.
  • Burrel is listed on a John Smith's deed.[11] (There are two John Smith's in this census).
  • Burrel Hairgroves land on Bogue Swamp borders Stephen Smith's land. [12] Joanna Council married Samuel Stephen Smith.
  • p.79- James Dupree and family.
  • p. 79- John Smith age 16 and up. (See Burrel Hairgroves above. See James Dupree below).
  • one male under 16.
  • four females.
  • John Smith's House located- just below Jonathan Pierce Heirs on Map- Short & Beers Lands-
  • On Kaintuck Island.
  • The location of John Smith's house is on the deed of James Dupree, Sr., 1787. [13]
  • James Dupree, Sr. deed: (200 acres)
  • Bladen County.
  • Issued Nov. 19, 1787. Grant no. 1265. (Book 65, page 542).
  • "On the East side of White Marsh Swamp".
  • "Known by the name of Kaintuck Island".
  • "Just below John Smith's house".
  • There are a ton of Smiths in this 1790 census. So, there is a good chance that this John Smith is not the brother or father of our Arthur Smith. Need proof.

.....

  • p. 79- David Mims and family. (This appears to be David Sr. There is a David Junior also.) (Numerous Mims (Mems) families in this census.)[14]
  • p. 79- Thomas Smith and family. And 20 slaves. (Who is Thomas?)
  • p. 80- William Smith and family. (There are two William Smith families on p.80.)
  • p. 80- Simon Smith and family.
  • p. 81- Elizabeth Lucas and family.
  • p. 82- Thomas Smith and family.
  • p. 83- William Smith and family. (There are two William Smith families on p.83.)
  • p. 83- John Smith age 16 and up.
  • one more male age 16 and up.
  • three females.
  • p. 84 Francis Davis age 16 and up.
  • one male under 16.
  • five females.
  • seven slaves.
  • Not sure if this is the same Francis Davis that patented 640 acres, June 5, 1740 on south side of Bogue Swamp. This 640 acres went to Able Davis. Then this 640 acres went to John Smith, Sr., proved May 1774. Bladen County.

Because there are so many "John Smiths", it is difficult to straighten them out. If you look at the Will of the John Smith, Sr. (ca. 1752-1823) His Will is in Sumter County, S.C.- recorded March 15, 1823. He lists his wife and six children:

  • 1. John Smith, Jr.
  • 2. Tabitha (Smith) Wright. (born 1775)
  • 3. Levina (Smith) Goff. (born 1780) See Levina in 1850 Kershaw Co., S. C. census.
  • 4. Mary (Smith) Mims
  • 5. Sarah (Smith) ______?
  • 6. Elizabeth Smith. (born 1790)

It is possible, that these two, John Smiths, listed in the 1790 Bladen County Census are father and son. Need verification.

(Numerous Council families in this 1790 Bladen census.)

__________

1790 Northampton County, N.C. census, p. 580:[15]

  • Some researchers list Elisha as the father of Jonathan Pierce (1779-1861).

Elisha is also in 1800, 1810, 1820 Northampton County censuses. There are 9 pages in Elisha Pierce Estate Files, Northampton County.

  • 5 males under 16.
  • 3 females.
  • 1 slave.
  • The people in this family are similar to our Arthur Smith's (born about 1745) family. But as our Arthur Smith is in the deeds and the 1784 Bladen County Tax List, this 1790 Anson County Arthur Smith is likely not ours.
  • p. 195- Lucy Stuckey (4 people in household).
  • p. 195- Wright Pearce and family. (There are four Pearce families in this census.)
  • There are thirteen Smith families in this census, including John Smith Sr. and Jr.

  • It seems to indicate this 1777 deed is in Cumberland County deeds.?
  • John Blocker is a witness on this 1777 deed.
  • John Blocker is in the 1790 Cumberland County census.
  • John Blocker was a Captain in the Revolution with Bladen County Regiment.

There is a John Smith from Bladen County, and, or Cumberland County that is on the Revolutionary Pay Vouchers, No. 68 (April 9, 1781Cumberland County) image 587 of 924. And on image 586 of 924, (No. 12) is John Smith and R. Singletary.[21]

  • There is a Arthur Smith in Muster Rolls (1812) Bladen County, N.C. This is likely not our Arthur Smith, as he is in 1810 Sumter County, S.C. census.

__________

1790 Robeson County, North Carolina Census:[22]

  • p. 136- Samuel Smith[23] (lists no people?) Lists 13 slaves. The 1800 census list a Samuel as age 45 and up. Revolutionary soldier. Samuel's deed 1782 Bladen Co., lists Ashpole Swamp in Robeson Co., now, I guess.

Dennis Johnson,

I appreciate any help I can get on Ann Smith. But, as there are dozens of Ann Smiths, (the same time period) that died at this same time period in England, do you have any proof that this is our Ann Smith that died Mar. 15, 1823 at Westminster, England. Any family history? Any documents? Any notes? I know this date is on many online family trees, but that does not make it true. Need proof. thanks
