Biography

Denis was born in 1827. He was the son of Henry Gallwey and Margaret MacCarthy.

1. He was Barony High Constable (at Greenfield) in 1886 (ref 6) for Ardfield, County Cess Collector for the Barony of Ibane and Barryroe in 1893 (Ref 7 & 10).

2. He passed away in 1899 and bequeathed most of his possessions to his youngest sister Anne.

3. Probate 22 Jan 1900 (value £1129.50).

4. He had no issue.

5. dob partly confirmed by age of 70 years at death.

6. His will (24 Mar 1899) lists farms at Balteenbrack (map p. 95), Brownstown, part of Mountain Common he held in fee simple (1876 his land was 55+ acres Ref 9) bequeathed to his sister Annie with farm and dwelling house at Greenfield (earlier farms said in a codicil to have been sold by public auction); lease with Edwd. Townsend.

7. He d. after being ill for more than a year, hence lapse of time between will and death.

8. Dob given is taken as the same as date of baptism which is that given in the consolidated list mentioned in Note 3 of the entry for Gallwey-44. Unlike some others there is no separate entry for him.

9. He lad a lease on Brownstown from Edward Townsend

10. One of his cows was bitten by a rabid dog from Bandon and he cauterised it, apparently successfully (Ref 10).

2A. Birth?: The Constitution, Saturday 10 Nov 1827 "on Monday, the lady of Henry Gallwey Esq of Greenfield of a son" hence b. 5 Nov 1827 so baptism date maybe wrong

3. Ireland Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920 gives Probate of 22 Jan 1900 granted to his sister Anne [Gallwey-46] and dod given as 16 Sep 1899 but 16 was in error due to reading 0 as 6.

Death: Entry No. 345 of Deaths Register for district of Rosscarbery, union of Clonakilty in county of Cork (registered 5 July 1900) gives date as 10 Sep so presume probate was correct and 16 was read as 10. Described as gentleman and bachelor, aged 70 yrs actually 71, informed by Denis Donovan. Register image No 1 gives year of death as 1900 even though he d. in 1899 as Probate cannot precede death; image No 2 corrects it by putting year as 1899. Probate assumed to be correct. ALSO:
