Born at Barony Parish (Glasgow), Scotland in July 1823, Mary was the first child of Alexander Tennant and Janet Hamilton. Alexander was from Old Kilpatrick west of Glasgow in Dunbartonshire and Janet from Kelvindock, Glasgow. Married in 1822, Alex and Janet had eleven children, raising their family at their home in Partick. Alex worked as a calico printer - printing decorative patterns onto calico, a heavy cloth made of cotton.
Mary too worked in the cotton industry. As early as 1841 when she was 17, up until her marriage, Mary worked as a power loom weaver.
In Dec. 1863, she married George R. Harvey and they had one son. In 1871, George, Mary and young Alexander were in Bridgeton, returning to Partick by 1881.
Mary died at the Govan Poorhouse in July 1901, four days after her 78th birthday. Her former residence at 33 Crawford St. was across the River Clyde in Partick, a short block away from her son Alexander on Rosevale St. A hospital was attached to the Govan Poorhouse so her residence there was likely for medical care during her final days.
