Biography

Progenitor (stamvader):

Hendrik Kukkuk is the progenitor of all of the Kukkuk family born in South Africa. His names are spelled various ways on various documents.

It would seem that he arrived at the Cape approx. 1806 according to his application for 'burghership'.

My transcription of KAB CO vol 3907, Ref 57 dated 1817: Memorials received. H Kukuk. Requesting burghership of the colony (unmarried):

"I, the undersigned landrost of the district of Uitenhage do hereby certify at the request of Heinrich Kukkuk, born in Pyrmont, in the graafschap Pyrmont in Germany that the said Kukkuk has resided in this colony during eleven successive years and that upon due enquiry, nothing has appeared to me which would induce me to judge unfavourably respecting his character and conduct. Signed by JG Cuyler, landrost. 9/7/1817."

Marriage:

Marriage register: "Op Maandag den 14 Junij 1825 wend Hendrik Coenraad Koekoek timmerman te Uitenhage met Johanna Elisabeth Rietmuller in den huwelijken staad bevestigd." Signed by ds Alexander Smith.

Opgaafrol (census):

In the 1825 Opgaafrol (census) entry no. 93: Hendrik Kokkock and Maria Elisabeth Rietmulder: Under column families: 1 man 1 woman; they didn't own anything no servants, no slaves, no cattle, no muid sown or reaped, no alcohol, no property; no deaths in their family; only opgaaf money 5.0.0 and transport money 0.5.0 total 5.5.0

On several of his children's christening records, his names are given as Johan Hendrik Kukkuk.

Death:

According to his wife's death notice, he was still living in Sept 1853 when she died. So far no source has been found to indicate his date and place of death or burial.

Research Notes

So far no proof of the birth of the Kukkuk stamvader has been found. In the application for burghership by Heinrich Kukkuk we learn of his place of birth as Pyrmont, Germany which is in present-day Lower-Saxony. A brief history of Pyrmont can be found on Wikipedia [1]
