Biography

John Alvord, born at Fairfield, Connecticut, was the third child of Hannah (Goodsell) Alvord (1726-1757), the second wife of Elisha Alvord (1717-1776).

Note: A (transcribed) birth record gives the date as July 11, 1751 ^[1], whereas the Alvord genealogy states the date as July 11, with baptism July 15, 1750. In the absence of evidentiary documentation, the year of his birth is therefore uncertain.

John Alvord married twice, both at Greenfield Hill, Connecticut; first, on 11 Nov 1772, Sarah (Wakeman) Alvord (1748-1779) ^[2]. They had 2 children:

Sarah (Wakeman) Alvord died 26 Apr 1779, after which John Alvord married second, 14 Nov 1779, Abigail Banks [b. 9 Apr 1752 @ Fairfield, Connecticut, daughter of Nehemiah & Abigail (Bradley) Banks]. They had 6 children:

Per the Alvord genealogy, John Alvord lived and died in the northern part of the parish of Greenfield, Conn. He was engaged in the manufacture of boots and shoes, employing a number of workmen. His shop was 20x40 ft. and two stories high. He was admitted to full communion in the church, Sept. 24, 1780.

American Revolutionary War service: "Alvord, John, Corporal. Capt. Dimon's Co., Col. Beebe's Reg. of Fairfield, May, 1775. Minute men and volunteers." (Conn. Men in the Rev.) John Alvord applied for a pension Nov. 18, 1833. His claim was allowed. The following record of service was given in his application: 1 mo. in 1776 in Capt. Ebenezer Hill's Co.; 1 mo. in 1777 in Capt. Ebenezer Hill's Co.; 3mos. in 1778 in Capt. Ebenezer Hill's Co., Col. Dimon's Reg.; 1 week in 1779 in Capt. Ebenezer Hill's Co., Col. Dimon's Reg. ; 6 mos. in 1779 in Capt. Ebenezer Hill's Co., Col. Dimon's Reg.; 6 mos. in 1780 as sergeant in Capt. Ebenezer Hill's Co., Col. Dimon's Reg. It is also stated that he was present as a soldier at the burning of Danbury and Fairfield, Conn. His residence at time of his enlistment was Greenfield, Conn., at time of application for pension, Fairfield, Conn. His pension ledger corroborates this account ^[3].

John Alvord died 3 Jul 1845 at Southport, Connecticut. His grave is in Greenfield Hill Cemetery, Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA ^[4].
