Biography

Reverend Edwin Olmsted served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Apr 18, 1861
Mustered out: Oct 17, 1862
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Co H, 4th Ohio Infantry

Mr. Olmsted taught school two years at Mount Sterling, KY and ten years in Ohio; removed to Washington, DC and became Superintendent and Pay Clerk, Post OFfice Department and local Editor of Daily National Intelligencer; removed to Murphy, NC where he taught school for four years. Then became President of the Presbyterian (Cumberland) High School at London, TN. Removed to Jacksonville, FL in 1874 and was Principal of the City School. Removed to Eufala, AL in 1879 and was President of the Union Female College there. He served in the Civil War as Capt., Co. H, 4th Regt., Ohio Vols. Detailed by Gen. McClelland to construct fortifictions in West Virginia; was afterwards Chief of Engineers on Staff of Gen. James Shields, then Capt. Pioneer Corps under Gens. Banks and Pope. He was discharged on surgeons' certificate of disability in 1863.[1]

Edwin B. Olmsted was mustered in as a Captain in Co. H, 4th Ohio Infantry Regiment on April 18, 1861. He participated in the battles of Rich Mountain and Romney. “After a great variety of regular and detached service, was wounded while constructing a bridge over the Shenandoah, near Front Royal, and discharged for disability.” He was mustered out on October 17, 1862. In 1864, at the request of Gov. Brough, he was sent to take the vote of Ohio soldiers in front of Charlestown and Hilton Head, S. C.. [2] [3]

Edwin was married three times and had four children.

His first wife was Adelia Church and they had four children:

  1. Victor Hugo, b. 1852
  2. LeDu Rollin, b. 1856
  3. Edwin BIgelow, Jr., b. 1861, d. 1930
  4. William Dennison, b. 1866, d. 1926

He then married Adelia Jefferss; they had no children together.

This third wife was Mary Strong; they had no children together.

He died March 10, 1902 in Delevan, Cattaraugus County, New York. He is buried in Sardinia Cemetery, in Sardinia, Erie County, New York with his wife, Mary Strong. [4] [5]
