King Hiram Douglas was born on Feb. 4, 1838 in Campbell Co., Tennessee. Several family trees show King as having been born in Newcomb, however, Newcomb was not founded until 1878. Born near present day Woolridge, abt 3 miles from present day Newcomb, in Campbell Co., TN.
King, the given name he used, was the son of Matthew Douglas (1791-1845) and Nancy Ann King (1792-1861), the youngest of their ten known children. Both of his parents are buried in Douglas Cemetery #1 located in Wooldridge, Campbell Co., TN, not far from where they lived.
King's parents were born in The Territory South of the Ohio River (aka Southwest Territory). Prior to being ceded to the United States by North Carolina in 1790, the territory was called North Carolina's "Western Territory". In 1796, the territory officially became Tennessee, the 16th state to be admitted to the Union. Neighboring Kentucky a had become the 15th state in 1792.
King's father, Matthew, was the son of Revolutionary War soldier (North Carolina Militia), John Douglas (1764-1842), and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ford (1764-1815). Both were born in Rowan Co., NC and both died in Washington Co., TN. King's paternal grandfather, John, was born in that part of Rowan Co., North Carolina that became part of Surry Co., NC in 1771. He died in Washington Co., TN. John was the son of Mordecai Mitchell Douglas (1730-1800) and Mary "Polly" Siler (1730-aft 1764).
King's mother, Nancy, was the daughter of Kirby King (abt 1752/55-1795/96) and Uroth Murray (abt 1752/55-1806?). Like her husband, Nancy was born (1792)in Washington County, Territory South of the Ohio River (aka Southwest Territory). She was a sister to Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880), the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co., KY (then Whitley Co.). He moved his family from Campbell Co., TN to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co., KY) about 1819.
On Oct. 14, 1858, King married Mary Ann "Sally" Perkins (1837-1922). Born in Campbell Co. TN, Polly (an old time nickname for Mary), she was the daughter of Edward Ned Perkins Sr. (1811-1894) and Sarah Ann "Sally" Lay (1815-1869). Sally's father, Edward, was born in Campbell Co., TN, the son of Peters Perkins (1775-1847) and Elizabeth Brown (1779-bet 1850/60). Sally's mother, Sally, was also born in Campbell Co., TN. She was the daughter of John David Lay (1792-1860) and Mary Duncan (1793-1873).
King and Sally were married about nine years and had four known children, all born in Campbell Co., TN. They were James Matthew Douglas (1857-1943), Nancy Ann Douglas (1861-1930), Zachariah H. Douglas (1863-1930) and Mary Jane Douglas (1868-1912).
King was a soldier in the 1st East Tennessee Calvary Regiment and later with the East Tennessee National Guard during the Civil War. He may have enlisted for service more than once.
King died on Dept. 18, 1867 in Campbell Co., TN. The cause of his death at such a young age (29) is currently unknown. Lingering Civil War injury? Disease? Accident? He is buried in the Douglas Cemetery (#1) in Wooldridge, Campbell Co., TN and was one of the earlier adult burials. His father, the first burial, was buried there in 1845, his mother (the 3rd known burial) in 1861.
Although Sally was just 30 when King died, she did not remarry. She died on July 13, 1922 in Campbell County at the age of 84. Sally is buried in the Stanfield Cemetery, located in Stanfield, Campbell Co., TN. Stanfield is only about 13 miles from Wooldridge, Campbell Co., TN.
