Research Notes

As I began researching Jessie's life, I was surprised to learn that she had been married three times, and divorced twice (see timeline below for details), which struck me as unusual.
It was only after my father took a Y-chromosome DNA test that I began researching my great-grandmother in earnest. A Y-chromosome DNA test ("Y-DNA test") is used to explore a man's direct father's-line ancestry. The Y chromosome, like the patrilineal surname, passes down virtually unchanged from father to son.[17]
We were stunned to see that my father's Y-DNA test results did not resemble any of the Y-DNA tests of other Mullings males--including those of his first cousin. My dad's father, Marshall, had two brothers, and those brothers had sons, so a Y-DNA test from one of these men should have matched my father's. DNA testing also showed that my father and his first cousin only shared about half of the DNA expected for a first cousin--and all of their shared DNA matches were from Jessie's side of the family.
While my dad's cousin's test didn't match my dad's, it did match other Mullings' men's Y-DNA tests. After repeating my dad's test (and getting the same results), I began searching for my grandfather's biological father.
Thanks to the Y-DNA test my father took, we knew that his Y-DNA matches shared the surname "Hutchinson." Unfortunately, none of Jessie's three husbands had that name.
