Family History. 1

Jacob Sanson, a thorough & prosperous farmer of Faulkner County Arkansas, is a son of William H. and Nancy Sanson who was born, reared and married in South Carolina and moved from there to the State of Georgia where Jacob was born in DeKalb County in 1826. From Georgia the family moved to Alabama about the year 1835 where the mother died in 1841, a devoted member of the Baptist church. After her death the family moved to Tennessee in 1843 where the father died in the same year. William Sanson was a blacksmith by trade and could be considered an artist in that line. He fought in the War of 1812 and in later life he became a very prominent citizen of Georgia, holding office as Justice of the Peace in that state for a number of years. His father was Micage(r)n H. Sanson, a native of England who immigrated with his parents to America at an early age. Jacob was the 9th child of 6 sons and 7 daughters born to the parents of only himself & 1 sister are now living (1890) the latter, Mrs. Dicie Morgan of Mississippi. Jacob had only 2 days of schooling in his entire life. The knowledge he acquired by his own application whoever greatly exceeds many college graduates. After the death of his father he started himself as a farm laborer in the State of Mississippi where he resided for 10 years. In 1852 he was married in Tippah County, Mississippi to Miss R. N Ross, daughter of William Ross. This wife died 1872 leaving 6 children of whom 2 daughters are all that remain (1890): Amanda, wife of Henry Watson, and Sally, wife of Tom Carter. In 1873 he was married Miss Matilda Bland, a charming widow and daughter of James and Sarah Hollingshead of Alabama by whom he had one son, Tilden Hendrix. Mr. Sanson continued to reside in Mississippi until 1868 when he came to Faulkner County, Arkansas and has lived on his present farm for about 9 years, 6 miles east of Conway. Here he owns a splendid farm of 240 acres and has placed 125 acres in cultivation all the result of his own enterprise and good management. In 1861 Mr. Sanson joined the Mississippi Regiment of Infantry and after one month was taken very ill and was discharged. In June 1862 he enlisted in Co. D 43rd MS Regiment and was with Gen Lee during the 7 days right before Richmond. He also fought at Gettysburg & was taken prisoner at that place and was taken to David's Island, New York where he wa exchanged and furloughed and went back home to recover from several dangerous wounds received at Gettysburg and other battles. His left hand was entirely shot away at Gettysburg. In practice Mr. Sanson was a Democrat & has voted for every presidential candidate in that party up to 1871 since his 1st vote for Pierce in 1852. He was a member of the Baptist Church until 8 years ago when he joined the Methodist Church. The Grahams Chapel Church is built on land donated by Mr. Sanson. 1
