Biography

Anne Bacon, eldest daughter of Sir Nicholas Bacon and his wife Anne Butts, (1572-1624) was baptised at Redgrave Suffolk on 11 or 21 August 1572.[1]

She married Sir Robert Drury, Kt, MP (1575-1615),[2] of Hawstead, Suffolk. This alliance was in line with the ambitions of her father Sir Nicholas to increase his power in local politics, as the Drurys were anciently an influential family, but Sir Robert unfortunately inherited debts from his father, for which Sir Nicholas Bacon stood surety, and Anne Drury was frequently left at Redgrave and Culford while her husband was overseas on his military and diplomatic adventures.[3]

The marriage produced two daughters who died young. Dorothy who died at age four, is commemorated in the church of Hawstead[4] with an undated memorial:

She, little, promis'd much
Too soon untyed:
She only dreamt she liv'd,
And then she dyde.

Elizabeth Drury, who died in 1609, lived to aged 15, as she is represented in alabaster on her tomb, with an epitaph in Latin verse ("in pulchritudine et innocentia") by family friend John Donne.[4]

Sir Robert Drury died 2 April 1615 at the age of 40 and was buried at Hawstead, near his daughters. Anne Drury never remarried. It was said by her friends that "you loved Sir Robert Drury soe well that your eye could behould as yett not aney answerable unto time and therfor all men or any man to you was as nothinge in respect of him."[5]

Anne Drury died on 5 June 1624. She joined Sir Robert in the tomb at Hawstead, with a monument that is said to have cost her £140.[2] [4]
