Biography

William, son of William and Bathsheba (Stetson) Holmes, was born at Pembroke, MA on June 21, 1716^[1]. He married Elizabeth Hamlin, daughter of Benjamin and Anne (Mayo) Hamlin, at Bridgewater, MA on 5 November 1750.^[2]

William and Elizabeth resided in Halifax, Massachusetts where the first 6 of their 7 children were born. Elizabeth was admitted to the Halifax church in August, 1757. The family removed to Winchester, NH between March 7, 1766, when he sold his property in Halifax, MA, and February 10, 1769, when he was Surveyor of Highways in Winchester.^[2][3]

In 1785, Wiliam (and Elizabeth?) moved to Hartland, Vermont where William along with his sons Stetson and Absolom are listed in the 1790 Census.^[4]

The last record of William Holmes was on January 21, 1800 when he acknowledged a deed. ^[2]

New Hampshire Death Records show the death of William Holmes 19 August 1808 in his 93rd year in Claremont, Sullivan County, ^[5][6]

Research Notes

The New Hampshire Death Record appears to be corect for William Holmes as he was born in 1716 and would have been in his 93rd year in 1808; however, there is not enough information to be certain as he was living in Vermont in 1800 and there is no record of him moving.
