He was educated at Stowe, Buckinghamshire before going on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied Anthropology. He was Captain of the Fencing Team at Cambridge.
He served in the British Army, first in the BEF in France, 1939-1940. He was evacuated from Dunkirk. In 1943 he was sent out to Burma with 5th Indian Div. and fought the Japanese there. He reached the rank of Major.
In 1941 his elder brother Jo was killed off the Humber in HMS Pintail.
On his return to England, he re-joined the Colonial Office and served in Northern Nigeria from 1947-1962. He learnt Hausa.
When Nigeria became independant he came back to England with his wife & 4 children and settled in Godstone, Surrey. He then joined the Order of St John of Jerusalem in Clerkenwell, London, as Secretary-General.
Before his retirement he was awarded the CBE by the Queen.
In his retirement he worked for Dorset Historic Churches Trust and the Royal British Legion.
He enjoyed shooting, reading, watching sport and gardening.
