He was a Civil War veteran, serving in Company K of the 30th Illinois Infantry. He entered the service at Chattanooga in McPherson's divison and was wounded during the capture of Atlanta on 15 June 1864. After recovering, he re-entered the service in Nov. 1864 and was mustered out 15 july 1865 at Louisville, KY.
He was the father of ten children. At the time of his death he was the heaviest taxpayer on real estate in Helvetia township. He passed away in 1905.
