"When David Read Settles Eskridge was born on October 21, 1855, in Shelby, North Carolina, his father, Oliver, was 23 and his mother, Martha, was 23. He married Martha Eleanor Webb on August 21, 1880, in Corinth, Mississippi. [I heard from my father, Jerry "Fred" Parish, LONG ago that David Eskridge had been a Methodist (p? maybe Baptist?) circuit rider covering E Texas, Arkansas, and N Mississippi -- though census records in Texas list him as a farmer and I have not found any records of him as a preacher. Still, he may have come into oil money in the huge N Texas oil boom at the turn of hte century and had the leisure to leave the farming to others; that is SHEER speculation: almost everything i DO know has come via Ancestry.com, where the search engine finds some public records easily --especially other family trees on their web-site. I've looked in vain for records of his attending school -- though again, family legend says that my grandmother Leah was sent to Normal School and became a school-teacher, and that the man she married was her 3rd grade student [he was a rancher with oil and Daddy said he picked up a little "book'larning" when he could -- but no records have turned up for her either] ed. p Parish 6/05/2016].

They had many children during their marriage, including my grandmother, Leah Dave [David?] Eskridge, b 1894 [who was named after him, and who married Ruben Parish in 1917 in Wichita Falls, TX, .

David Eskridge died on January 23, 1947, in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 91. Life Story Family

I do not know how to add this information properlyb ut David's parents were

Oliver Newton Eskridge Oliver Newton Eskridge 1831–1906 Martha Susanna "Maggie" Harrill 1832–1883

Via Ancestry.com, I've traced the Eskridges back to colonial Virginia, where Col. George Eskridge was first an indentured servant, then a country lawyer and plantation owner, local magistrate, and legislator. He was executor of many wills, and was mde guardian of young Mary Ball, an orphan who grew up to be George Washington's mother. I suspect that David Eskridge knew this, because his daughter my grandmother knew it and was insanely proud of it. Any family wanting this information, it's easy to get via Ancestry; but I'll be willing to tell you what I know insofar as I understand how the software for sharing it.

I am new to this site and hope I am doing things right. I've just added some family lore about David Eskridge based on what I heard 40 years ago from my father; I may have heard wrong, I may have mis-remembered, and Daddy may have been biased; he did always say that David played favorites, and that my grandmother Leah was not his favorite. Daddy was in turn, NOT his mother's favorite.
