Biography

Zacharias was the second son of John Maxwell and Elizabeth Stewart.^[1][2] He was a staunch Covenanter and suffered greatly for his beliefs before the Glorious Revolution in 1688.^[1]

John was a prosperous merchant in Glasgow and from those profits he was able to purchase the lands of Blawarthill (also known as Blawart Hill).^[1]

He died in April 1698 after a fall from a horse while attending the funeral of a friend, Sir Thomas of Coltness, Baronet. His wife Jean survived.^[1]

This is a branch of the family of Maxwell of Auldhouse, now represented by Sir John Maxwell, Bartonet of Nether Pollok.

Family

Zacharias married Jean Maxwell, 1st wife of John Colquhoun, daughter of John Maxwell. They were the parents of two sons and five daughters.^[1]

1. James, who became 2nd of Blawarthill (1698-1732)^[1]
2. John, heir who became John of Pollok and Blawarthill.^[1][2][3]

Daughters:

1. Jean, married hugh Crawfurd of Woodside^[1][2]
2. Margaret, married Robert Stewart, son of Sir Thomas Stewart of Coltness, Baronet^[1][2]
3. Grizell, who married Claud Hamilton of Barns in Dunbarton. Their marriage contract is dated 23rd April 1714. They had issue.^[1] Some other sources cite a marriage to Robert Hutcheson (later Pollok). No sources cite both marriages
4. Marion, married David Lauder^[1][2]
5. Elizabeth, married John Bryson^[1]

Research Notes

A birth date of 1665 had been proposed in a self-published index in 2007, but that source lists many Maxwells with a birth date of 1665. This is deemed unreliably too late as he suffered as an adult during a Covenanter. ^[4]
