Biography
Stogner Bray[1] was born in about 1834[2] in Hancock County, Tennessee[3][4] to Abijah Bray[2] and Polly (Webb) Bray[2]. Based on his birth date and the 1839 marriage date of his parents, Stogner appears to have been born before his parents married. While his older sister Millie sometimes appears in records using her mother's maiden name Webb, Stogner has not been located in any record with any last name other than Bray.
He married Jane Jackson[5][6][7], probably in about 1857 based on the birth of their first recorded child, Nancy. They have not been located in the Claiborne County marriage records, suggesting they married in Hancock County, where the marriage records were later lost in a fire.
Stogner served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; he enlisted on 3 October 1862 in Claiborne County, Tennessee in Company H of the 61st Tennessee Infantry[17]. He was captured by the Union Army at the Battle of the Big Black River Bridge in Hinds County, Mississippi on 17 May 1863[17] and was held as a prisoner of war until he took the oath of allegiance and was released on 4 March 1865[17].
Stogner died in either June 1886 [18] or on 1 November 1886[19], probably in Hancock County, Tennessee, and was buried in the Old Bray Cemetery in Hancock County, Tennessee[19].
