Biography

James Madison Dobbins was born on September 17, 1860. He was the son of Moses Dobbins and Sarah E. Mitchell Dobbins.[1]

Marriage / Minnie Alice Evins

J. M. Dobbins and Minnie Alice Evins were issued a marriage license in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States on December 30, 1885 by John B. Steward, Ordinary. They were married on January 3, 1886 by W. C. Holbrook, L. B. Minnie was listed with the surname Ivins in this record.[2]

In the 1900 U. S. Census (June 18, 1900) James and Minnie had been married fifteen years and lived in the Buckhead District of Fulton County, Georgia, United States. James was thirty-nine years old and Minnie was thirty-two. They lived on a farm owned free of a mortgage and James was farming. They could both read and write. They had two daughters; 13 year old Jewell and Mary was ten. The daughters had attended five months that year and all four family members could read and write.[3]

In the 1910 U. S. Census (April 15, 1910) the family of James and Minnie remained in Buckhead District but were no longer on a farm. They lived in a home on North Peachtree Road that was owned free of mortgage. James was forty-nine and working on his own account as a street peddler. Minnie was forty-one and the mother of four children. Their oldest daughter, Jewell, was married to Coleman Dilbeck and they had a four month old son, John. They lived in the same dwelling with her parents but was listed as a separate family. Mary, age 20, was working as a school teacher in a public school. The other two children were three year old twins; J. T and Beatrice Dobbins.[4]

In the 1920 U. S. Census (September 5, 1920) Mack was fifty-eight he was farming on a farm that was owned without a mortgage. Minnie was fifty-two years old. There were three other household members. The twins, Tinnie and Beatrice, were thirteen and attending school. The third child was listed as Jewell Dobbins and looks like she was fifteen years old. (see notes below)[5]

Death and Burial

James died at the age of sixty-eight on February 25, 1929 in Chamblee, DeKalb County, Georgia, United States.[1]

James' funeral was held at Sardis Methodist church on Wednesday, February 27, 1929. He was buried at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Fulton County, Georgia, United States.[6][1]

Who was Jewell in the 1920 U. S. Census

Jewell, the daughter of James and Minnie, was born in about 1886 on the 1900 & 1910 U. S. Census and in 1910 she was twenty-three, married to Coleman Dilbeck for a year and had one son. They had four children and already had a daughter named Jewell so it seems impossible that there was a child two years older than the twins and given the same name as an older child. The Jewell in the 1920 U. S. Census looks like she was fifteen years old and listed as Jewell Dobbins (her maiden name). Was the surname and age wrong? Was she not a daughter but a cousin or other family relationship? Please add information if you can find the mystery?(Cushing-1054 00:27, 29 April 2024 (UTC))[5]
