Biography

Raymond Clare Archibald was born at South Branch, Upper Stewiacke, Colchester County, Nova Scotia on October 7, 1875.[1] He was an only child.

He received a BA from Mt. Allison University in 1894. He then went to Harvard University where he earned a MA in 1896 and an MA in 1897. He then went to the University of Strasbourg where he earned his PhD in 1900. He also studied violin with Dr. Boise while at Strasbourg.

Returning to Sackville Raymond Archibald accepted a position as Professor of mathematics (and violin) at Mt Allison University (1900-1907). in 1907, he moved to Nova Scotia where he spent a year (1907-1908) as Professor of mathematics.

In 1908 he moved to Rhode Island where he would become Professor of mathematics, Brown University, Providence Rhode Island, a position he woild hold for more than thirty years. (1908-1943).

In his long career he wote numerous journal papers and monographs and several books on the subject of mathematics. He was also an editor of several mathematical journals.

From 1921 to 1941 he was the librarian for the Mathematical Association of America and in 1922 he served as President of the Association. In after his retirement he founded and edited "Mathematical Tables and Aids to Computation" (1943-49).

Raymond died at Sackville, New Brunswick July 25, 1955. He did not marry or have children. [2]

Outside of his work, one of Professor Archibald's main interests was collecting books on mathematics, poetry and music. His collection of books on mathematics went to Brown University. He donated his collection of books on poetry and music, including 2 700 phonograph records and 70 000 song sheets to Mt. Allison University, where it is maintained in the Mary Mellish Memorial Library.
