Johann Georg Abig/Abich was born about 1742, probably in the Gelnhausen area of what is now Germany. The names of his parents have not yet been confirmed.

The spelling of the surname goes back and forth between Abich and Abig, and I can't tell what the original spelling of the name was. I will leave his surname as Abig for now until I can confirm the spelling through a birth or marriage record.

Johann Georg Abig married Anna Maria Schröder on 18 March 1766 in Büdingen, Germany. ^[1]

According to the Büdingen records, Johann Georg was from Gelnhausen, but the Kulberg Reports say he was born in Hanau. The two towns are about 15 miles apart, according to Google Maps. ^[2]

The Kulberg Reports show that Georg was a Lutheran shoemaker, traveling with his wife Anna Maria under document 4906. ^[3] They sailed from Luebeck on the Russian Pink Vologda, a small, flat-bottomed ship with a narrow stern, typically square rigged and used to sail short distances and/or in shallow waters, ^[4] arriving in St. Petersburg on 10 August 1766. The couple is listed in the first census of Grimm, in the Volga Region of Russia, taken almost exactly one year from the date they arrived in Russia.
