William Maxam was born in Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts on 13 February 1786, the son of Samuel Maxham IV and Margaret Lucas. In about 1810 in Adams, Jefferson County, New York, William married Martha Tiffany. Their first child, William Tiffany Maxam, was born in 1811. William and Martha had at least twelve more children. During the War of 1812, William served in the Company of Volunteer Militia under Captain Elisha Allen of the 55th Reg't in service of the U.S. – Lt. Col. Anthony Sprague commanding, out of Jefferson County, NY. In the 1820 and 1830 U.S. Federal Census, William and his family are recorded as living in Adams, Jefferson County, New York. In 1833, William, Martha, and their first eleven children moved to Twinsburg, Summit County, Ohio, where they are recorded in the 1840 and 1850 Census, and where they had at least two more children. William, a farmer, is said to have had two sickles for cutting grain. William Maxam died on 4 February 1854, and was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, Twinsburg, OH, where his grave marker reads Wm MAXUM. 1
