Biography

Ephraim Wales Taft was born in 1795 in Weston, Massachusetts to Dr. Joseph Taft and Lois Spring Taft. "Ephraim Wales, s. Joseph and Lois, Mar. 21, 1795."

He moved with his family to Maine sometime after the death of his father in 1824. There he married Maria Boyd Cobb about 1831 in Gouldsboro. The couple had four children: Maria, Susan, Edward and Richard Fletcher Taft.

Ephraim served as postmaster at Gouldsboro:

"Gouldsborough February 27th 1837. Then appeared Ephriam W. Taft and took the oath prescribed by law to serve as Post Master. Before me, H. M. Sowle, Justice of the peace."

Mrs. Ephraim Taft (Maria Cobb Taft) served as Postmaster as well at Gouldsborough - West. Her name appears in the 1882 Maine State Year-book and Legislative Manual.

Wales Taft died in the spring of 1873 in West Gouldsboro, Maine at 78 years of age.
