Biography

Birth

A FamilySearch transcription of his birth record says that Andrew Hall was born at Buckfield, Maine (which was then in Massachusetts) on 9 Jun 1793, the son of Enoch Hall and Miriam (Furbish) Hall.^[1] The 1915 history of Buckfield gives his birth date as 9 Jun 1792.^[2]

Marriages

1. In an undated entry, the town clerk of Livermore, Maine, certified that "an intention of marriage between Mr. Andrew Hall of Buckfield & Miss Elizabeth Packard of Livermore hath been entered with me & published as the law directs."^[3] The entry occurs immediately before one dated 2 Dec 1821, but the marriage intentions in the Livermore records in this period were frequently entered some time after the marriages occurred, and in the 1915 history of Buckfield, the first child of Andrew Hall of Buckfield and Betsey (Packard) Hall of Livermore is shown with a birth date of 3 Jun 1820.^[2]
2. Andrew Hall was probably the man of that name who married Martha Bicknell at Hartford, Maine, on 5 Jul 1838.^[4] In the 1850 Census, the Andrew Hall family of Peru, Maine, includes Andrew Hall, 55, born in Maine; Martha Hall, 35, born in Massachusetts; and Enoch Hall, 10, born in Maine.^[5] See the Research Note below.

Children

Andrew Hall had five known children, all probably born at Buckfield, Maine. The first four were with Elizabeth (Packard) Hall and are listed in the 1915 history of Buckfield with the names of their spouses,^[2] and Enoch is shown in the 1850 Census^[5] and is also known from his death record.^[6]

Death

The 1915 history of Buckfield says that Andrew Hall died at Peru, Maine, on 30 Mar 1871.^[2] A FindAGrave memorial with no photo and no sources cited says that he is buried at the East Buckfield Cemetery in Buckfield, Maine.^[7]

Research Note

The 1915 history of Buckfield says, with a question mark, that the Andrew Hall who married Martha P. Bicknell was Andrew Hobson Hall, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Packard) Hall. This cannot be, for the 1915 history shows the younger Andrew Hall born in November 1824,^[2] and the marriage of Andrew Hall and Martha Bicknell occurred in July 1838, when he would have been just 13 years old. The evidence suggesting that the Andrew Hall born in 1792 (or 1793), the man living at Peru in 1850, the man who married Elizabeth Packard in about 1820, and the man who married Martha Bicknell in 1838 are all the same man includes:

• His age of 55 in 1850, consisent with a man born in 1792 or 1793, given the frequent minor discepancies in ages from census records
• Enoch Hall (which was the name of Andrew's father), living with them in 1850, and the death record of Enoch E. Hall in 1892, which names his parents as Andrew Hall and Martha Bicknell, his birthplace as Buckfield, and an age at his death that computes to a birth in early 1840^[6]
• Andrew's death in 1871 at Peru, where Andrew, Martha, and Enoch Hall were living in 1850
