"As a young woman (around age 24), Edla was engaged to be married to a young man named John Johanson, and their banns (announcement of their intent to marry) had been published in the local Lutheran Church. Then Edla discovered that she was pregnant. Her fiancé, John, upon being informed of this, mentioned it to some of his friends, who sugested to him the possibility that the expected child may not be his. So he went o Edla and questioned her about that. She was so insulted, and so angry that he would doubt her, that she broke off their engagement. Even though he begged forgiveness and peaded with her to marry him. she refused him."
