Luna Rhea served for Tennessee in the War of 1812 Service started: Unit(s): Service ended:
In his grandchild Josephine's Eastern Cherokee Application,[1] as well as her son George Loren[2] they mention that John was injured in battle. He was fighting with the British, and was "attacked by Indians" and his daughter Abigail "hated them" although she married someone who they say is part Cherokee.
In his pension file[3] it says that his wife Peggy is filing it as his widow. It also confirms that Abigail Haley was her child. It says that Luna was a private in Capt Walker's company, 39th reg US Infantry. It also confirms that he was injured - "Battle with the Hostile Creek Indians at the Horseshoe on the Tallapoosa River." In an application dated April 26 1872 it says that Peggy, 73 years old said - "he never fully recovered from his said wounds and in her opinion he died from the effects of said wounds." A doctor who was boarding at the same house when Luna died confirms these statements. They refer to his disability as being of the 1st class.
There is also a surgeons assessment in this file that appears to be from 1814 that says - "one ball entered below the scapula on the right side lodged in the back of his neck, another entered 4 inches lower, direction towards (?) disabling his legs. Disability of the first clap. It says that he's 20 years of age, brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion and 5' 10", it also says that when he enlisted he was a Blacksmith. It says that he started receiving $8 a month because he was "totally" disabled and unable to work, but then this was reduced to 2/3 around Sept 4 1827, and he got $5.33 a month instead. After his death it appears that his widow collected $12 a month. Another file that describes his injury doesn't mention his legs, but says that he had pain in his shoulders. It also says that both balls were lodged in him, and were not removed.
