Family lore tells us Ursula Zacharias and John Lambrecht eloped. Since John and her eldest son were born in Germany, presumably Ursula too was born there, sometime around 1780.
John was a British soldier with the De Watteville Regiment. When John enlisted he brought Ursula and their young son John with him. During the Napoleonic Wars, John's regiment was stationed at various locations in the Mediterranean Sea. In early 1806, the regiment arrived at Messina, Sicily, where their daughter Catharine was born later that year.
Since Ursula and family accompanied her husband's regiment in their travels, their children essentially grew up in the midst of a British Army camp.
The De Watteville Regiment was sent to Canada to augment British Army forces during the War of 1812, arriving at Kingston in June 1813. Once at Kingston, John anglicized his name to Lambert and they welcomed two more sons - Louis and Clement.
Ursula died at Kingston and was buried 30 Dec 1837, most likely in the old Upper Burial Grounds on Ordnance St. In her honour, the name Ursula was used repeatedly among her descendants.
