William was born in 1738, probably in Rutland, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. He was the son of James Bell and Martha (Crawford) Bell.[1] In early 1759, William bought 60 acres in Rutland West Wing (later, Oakham). A few months later, May 4, 1759, William and Christian(a) McFarland entered their intentions of marriage, and on September 13, 1759, they were married.[2][3][4] In 1763, William bought a 250 acre farm in Oakham. Before 1765, Christian died. On October 24, 1765, William married Hannah Stone in Barre.[5] At various times, in 1762, 1765, and 1770, William sold his lands in Oakham.[6] He moved to Murrayfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts (later, Chester, Hampden Co.) between September 1770 and September 1771.[7]Thereafter, he had a number of children with wife Margaret.[8] In 1790, William was the head of the household in Chester, Hampshire Co., consisting of four males 16 and older, one boy, and four females.[9] In the 1800 census William (age about 62) was living in Chester, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[10] In the 1810 census William (age about 72) was living in Chester, Hampshire, Massachusetts, United States.[11] William died at the age of about 87 on 23 November 1825 in Chester, Hampshire, Massachusetts, USA.[1]

It seems evident that William's second wife moved with him to Murrayfield, later Chester, as she died there. Yet, William also appears to have had numerous children with Margaret Simpson (described as his wife) in the 1770's. Did William and Hannah divorce?
