Biography

Hanora “Nora” O’Sullivan was born in Banemore, Ardfert, County Kerry on the 4th of May 1862. Her father was Florence O’Sullivan and her mother was Catherine ‘’Kit McCarthy. Nora was baptized on the 10th of May 1862. The godparents were Maurice Sullivan and Mary Sullivan.^[1] In 1877 the family moved to live in Ballybroman between Ardfert and Abbeydorney.

Marriage to Francis McDonnell of Tralee

Nora married Francis McDonnell of Tralee in Abbeydorney Church on the 30th of April 1887. ^[2] Francis McDonnell was born in Tralee on the 20th January 1850. He was the son of Michael McDonnell and Elizabeth Spring. ^[3] It is interesting that this famous family of butchers in Tralee are already in the business. In the marriage certificate of 1887 both Francis and his father give their profession as “victuler” or butcher.

Nora and Francis McDonnell lived in The Mall, Tralee, They had two children who were twins

1. Florence Joseph McDonnell was born in Tralee on the 17th of March 1888. The godparents at his baptism were Florence O’Sullivan and Bridget O’Sullivan. ^[4]
   Florence joined the family business of butchers. In the 1911 Census he gives his occupation as “Victualler.” Sadly Florence contracted influenza in the great flu epedmic of 1918. He died at their home in Ballyard, Tralee on November 4th 1918 at the young age of 30.^[5]
2. Michael Patrick McDonnell, Florence’s twin brother was born on the 17th of March 1888. At his baptism on the following day, his godparents were Maurice McDonnell and Bridget McDonnell. ^[6] Like his brother, Michael also went into the family business of butchers and the 1911 Census gives his occupation as “victualler.”
   On the 21 June 1921, Michael married Mary “Molly” Murphy from Clogherbrien, Tralee. Molly was the daughter of Patrick Murphy, a farmer. The witness at their wedding were Michael McDonnell and Lily Barton. ^[7]
   The children of Michael and Mary McDonnell carried on the family business and passed it on to another generation of McDonnell butchers in Tralee. Michael passed away at his home in The Mall Tralee on the 23 of March 1953. His wife Mary died on the 12 Dec. 1971 at the age of 75 years.. ^[8]

Francis McDonnell died in 1934 at his home in “The Mall” Tralee at the age of 77 years. His wife Nora O’Sullivan McDonnell died on the 20th of April 1944 in Lindville, Cork at the age of 81 years.^[9]
