Biography

This Thomas Sadlier is the last of three generations of Thomas Sadliers in the pedigree in Burke's Irish Family Records 1976 (pp. 1142-5). Burke has the first Thomas "d ca 1680", the second Thomas "d 1715" and the third Thomas "b 1680 ... d 1724".

As Mary Oliver was born in Ireland, her son was most likely also born in Ireland.

Thomas married Catherine Tilson, daughter of Thomas Tilson of Dublin, in 1701. [1]

Marriage Licence [2]

Sadlier, Thomas, Jnr of Kilneleagh, Parish of Oskeane, co Tipperary, Esquire and Tilson, Catherine of the Parish of St Paul's, Dublin., spinster. dated 29 August 1701.
  1. Oliver
  2. Francis (Col.), of Sopwell Hall, b. 1709: married Catherine Wall, daughter of Williim Wall, M.P. of Coolnamuck, co. Waterford, and niece of the Earl of Bessborough, on 21 March 1735.
  3. Charles, b. 1722, died 1734, aged 12.
  4. Elizabeth married John Bateman, of Altavilla, co. Limerick, 4th son of John Bateman, of Oak Park,co. Kerry, in 1745
  5. Alice married (1) Thomas Bateman, of Mount Catherine, co. Limerick, 3rd son of John Bateman, of Oak Park, co. Kerry, on 22 January 1740, (2) Unknown McCarthy.

He died in 1724. [3]

Confusion could arise from the fact that Sopwell Hall, Cloughjordan, county Tipperary clearly took its name from Sopwell in Hertfordshire in England.

In the sixteenth century, Edward Sadleir married Anne Leigh, of Sopwell, Herts., which was inherited by their son Richard Sadleir, by whose descendants it was sold a couple of generations later. However, Richard's son, Col. Thomas Sadleir moved to Ireland where he acquired Kinelagh Castle in county Tipperary in 1655 and renamed it Sopwell Hall. It remained in the Sadleir name for five generations, ending with the marriage in 1754 of Frederick Trench to Mary Sadleir, heiress of Sopwell Hall. Frederick's GGGgrandson Patrick Trench represented the 6th generation of the Trench family in Sopwell Hall. His widow, Julia Trench sold Sopwell Hall after the death of her husband in 1983, thereby bringing to an end ten generations and 328 years of family ownership of the Irish property and a much longer family link with the name Sopwell.

Research Notes

Alternate DOB appears as 1663 (before his mother's estimated birth year). Alternate LOB given as Sopwell, Hertfordshire, England. Alternate DOD given as 1710. Alternate LOD given as Kilnelagh Castle, Tipperary, Ireland. Further research needed to clarify these inconsistencies.

Sadleir-36 and Sadleir-35 appear to represent the same person because: the three generations of Thomas Sadliers in the pedigree in Burke's Irish Family Records 1976 (pp. 1142-5) appear to have become four generations of Thomas Sadliers in WikiTree, with the third Thomas born in 1663 but his mother Mary Oliver not born until abt 1665, about two years younger than her own son. I have made the two youngest Thomases (Sadlier-36/Sadleir-35) brothers rather than father/son and proposed that they be merged, although I could also have proposed a merge of Sadleir-36 and Sadleir-32. Most of the dates are unsourced. Burke has the first Thomas "d ca 1680", the second Thomas "d 1715" and the third Thomas "b 1680 ... d 1724".

As Mary Oliver was born in Ireland, her son was most likely also born in Ireland.
