Biography

Hazelle Ruth Showalter was born on 12 Aug 1915 in Terre Hill, East Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA, the daughter of John Edgar Showalter and Etta Mae Frank Showalter.^[1] She married John A. Hummer, Jr., on 4 Nov 1938 in Terre Hill.^[2] The couple had one child^[3] whom Johnny never saw. He was killed in action in France during World War II, ^[4] the same year their child was born. Hazelle spent the rest of her life living in Hershey, Derry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. ^[5] In the early 1980s she was living at 7 Killarney Building, Briarcrest Gardens, Hershey.^[6] She never remarried nor had any additional children.^[7] Hazelle died on 28 Oct 1994^[8] in Hershey. She was buried in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey, Pennsylvania. ^[9]

Hazelle’s obituary (unknown newspaper, unknown date) reads: “Hazelle Showalter Hummer, 79, of 7 Killarney Building, Briarcrest, Hershey, died Friday, October 28, at her home. Born in Terre Hill, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Henrietta Frank Showalter. She was a retired secretary for Hershey Foods; a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hershey V.F.W. Post #3502, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hershey American Legion Post #386. She was the widow of John Adam Hummer. Surviving are: a companion, Geno Gasper; a daughter, Jeri H. Hummer of Coatesville; a grand-daughter; a great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services were held Monday in the Hoover Funeral Home, Hershey. Interment was in the Hershey Cemetery. Visitation was Monday from 10 till 11 a.m. in the funeral home.”^[10]
