Research Notes

There is some conflict concerning the date of birth for Harriet.

  • The1850 census can imply a birth year of 1850 or 1849.
  • The 1860 census can imply a birth year of 1849.
  • The 1870 census can imply a birth year of 1849 or 1848.
  • The 1900 census says birth was in Aug 1847.
  • The 1910 census can imply a birth year of 1848.
  • The 1920 census can imply a birth year of 1850.
  • The Long Ridge Union Cemetery file card implies a birth year of 1850.
  • The entry in Deaths in the Town of Stamford states a birth year of 1850.
  • Harriet's obituary states she was 72 at her death thus implies a 1850 birth year.

The date on Harriet's gravestone is not considered as it was set decades after her death.

Harriet's middle name. No record has been found stating Harriet's middle name. Both the middle initial of "A" and of "J" are found in the Stamford City Directories and the federal censuses.

Marital Status It appears that Harriet and her husband Charles separated or divorced around 1887. The Stamford city directories for 1887 and 1889 show them living at different addresses.[10] Charles W. Caldwell does not appear in the Stamford directories after 1889. There is also a marriage on 25 March 1893 in Port Chester, Westchester County, New York between a Charles W. Caldwell and a Sarah C. Searles.[16] Perhaps obtaining the original marriage certificate will shed some light on if this is our Charles. The 1900 census[13] has a Charles W. Caldwell, wife Sarah C., and [step-]daughter Edith Toms living in Wilton, Fairfield County. The census states they were married for 7 years. Charles' death certificate states his marital status is married. Did Charles still consider he was married to Harriet, or was he actually married to Sarah?
We do know that Charles was buried in Roxbury Cemetery, Stamford, the same cemetery his parents are buried. We also know Harriet was buried at Long Ridge Union Cemetery, Stamford, in the same set of plots as two of her daughters.
