Biography

George Washington ("Wash") Johnson, the third child of Levi Johnson and Louisa Smith, was born 2 Jan 1852,[1] two miles west of Owensville, Indiana. Of George Johnson, Gil Stormont wrote, in 1914:[2]

George W. Johnson grew to maturity in Montgomery township on his father's farm. Here he lived the life of the average farmer boy, going to school in the winter seasons and working on the farm in the summer. ... Upon becoming twenty-one years of age, his father gave him forty acres of land, and within a year he bought an additional forty acres, just west of Owensville, and by strict attention to his business and by thrift and frugality, he gradually increased his holdings until he is now the owner of two hundred and forty acres of fine land, and in addition to this he has bought land which he has given to his daughter.
As a young man George W. Johnson attended Asbury University, now DePauw, at Greencastle, and after leaving the university he taught school for a number of years. ... All of the family are loyal members of the General Baptist church at Owensville. Mr. Johnson has been a member of the Free and Accepted Masons for thirty years, and has always taken an active interest in the affairs of that fraternal organization.

In 1877, George W. Johnson married Marovia Johnson,[3] and they had two children, a daughter and a son, the son dying in infancy.

  1. Laura Ella (Johnson) Emerson (1877-1961)
  2. Levi Johnson (1879)

Wash Johnson died in 1936 and is buried with his wife and other members of the family at Maumee Cemetery, Gibson County, Indiana.

Research Notes

  2. Stormont, 1914, p. 835.
  3. Wash and Marovia were second cousins once removed, both descended from Arthur Johnson.
