30 Aug 1877 Carlisle Weekly Herald p. 3: Carlisle Guards We have been shown a copy of the certificate of membership of General Jacob Fetter, residing in Chambersburg, a fromer citizen of Carlisle, which is a relic of olden times. It reads as follows: "I certify that Jacob Fetter, a mem,ber of the Volunteer Light Infantry Company, under my command, is completely uniformed and equipped, agreeable to law. Jos. Halbert, Capt" May 8th, 1815 Gereral Fetter, although in the 83d year of age, is still living in Chambersburg. The Captain Halbert referred to above was the grandfathe of Joseph Halbert, plasterer.

15 May 1878, Cpl Jacob Fetter age 83 appeared before the Franklin County Clerk of Court to receive a pension: John Gregg 9 has known him for 40 years) & Wm A B Thompson (was a 1st Lt in Fetter's company in War of 1812) of Chambersburg also appeared to vouch for him being in the War. Since his discharge from service, he resided in Carlisle PA for a great number of years, then went to the state of IA where he remained until 1865 or 1866, when he went to Chambersburg PA where he now lives. At the time of his enlistment at age 15, he was a cabinetrmaker in Carlisle PA. Dark hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, 5'-7 ½ " height Stated that his attorney was Jno R Orr of Chambersburg PA

1850: Plan of Carlisle by Sidney shows J. Fetter owning a lot on N side of 2nd block of E High St where Shelenberger Funeral Home was located in 1950s. Earl Gibbons Fetter remembers a log house that was torn down there to build the funeral home.

1850 Manufacturing Census: Capital $750. Matl on hand: mahogany, cherry, boards, hardware, haircloth $810. Four men employed. Annual value of products: $2850.

7 Dec 1843 AMER ADVOCATE News & Made in Cumberland County Exhibit 1750-1850 brochure, 1991, p. cover, 16: Shop on W High St, Carlisle, Cumb Co, PA opposite Rhoads' Tavern (Shown in Carlisle SENTINEL 6 Sep 1991, p.D2; paraphrased below): Cabinet Making and Chair Manufactory The subscriber informs his friends and the public generally, that he continues to carry on the Cabinet Making Business, at his old stand, West High street, opposite Mr Rhoad's Tavern, where he keeps constantly on hand and wil manufacture to order, all articles ib his line of business, such as Bureaus, Secretaries, Book Cases, Side Boards, Sofas, Tables, Bedsteads, &c at the very lowest prices. He also carries on the Chair Making Business in all its various branches and keeps a constant supply of Mahogany Chairs, Rocking Chairs, Windsor Chairs, Settees and Sociables all of which with every time else in the line, he is prepared to manufacture and dispose of on the most reasonable terms. He invites his old friends and the public in general to give him a call, as he feels well assured that he will be able to accommodate them in qualityand priceequal to any other establishment of the kind in the county. Now in Hamilton Library in Carlisle PA (paraphrased below): Gift of The Warrell Family Trust #1999.045 Jacob Fetter Jr was born 19 Jan 1796 in Carlisle. Fetter's father Jacob Fetter Sr as well as his sons, David and A. C. Fetter, were Carlisle cabinet makers. Their names appear in tax and census records from the 1790s through the 1850s. Jacob Fetter Jr served as a private in the Carlisle Guards during the War of 1812. He married Maria Marlin Cauffman 17 Jun 1817 and lived until 1878. He is buried in Cedar Grove Cem, Chambersburg, PA. ______ Made in Cumberland County Exhibit 1750-1850 brochure, 1991, p. 36, lists: Fetter, Jacob Sr. Carlisle. Tax List 1793; 1796 (carpenter). Obituary of his wife in Carlisle Gazette 9 Jun 1813 calls im cabinet maker. Jacob Sr sought an apprentice in 1802. Fetter, Jacob Jr. Tax List 1820-35. Advertisements, "continuing his work" in American Volunteer 16 Dec 1841 & 7 Dec 1843. 18 Feb 1847 dissolves partnership with son David. D F Fetter & A C Fetter take over father's shop. Jacob Fetter 1796-1878: Was wounded in his hand in War of 1812 by a British bayonet while trying to stop the British soldiers who were trying to land by boat at Baltimore. He had enlisted at age 16 in Carlisle Guards. After the War of 1812, he was a building contractor in Carlisle, then a cabinetmaker and undertaker, coachmaker (1835), then in the iron business of Alexander FETTER & HOYT. 1858-61 moved to Iowa; 1861 moved to Chambersburg PA. His brother known as "The General" Henry Fetter of Landisburg was also wounded in War of 1812 - perhaps at the Battle of Sandy Hook. His other brother Samuel Fetter was also in War of 1812.
