"Died, at Easton, on Friday night last, Josiah Winslow, aged about 25 years, and --- Hayward, aged about 19. The night being extremely cold, and the room in which they were to slepp having been recently plastered, they placed in it a large pan of lighted charcoals, and retired to bed late in the evening: early the next morning the family called them, but not receiving any answer opened the door, and distressing to relate, found them both dead. --- Hayward lying in bed perfectly natural, as though he were in a sound sleep, it appeared he expired without a struggle. From Winslow's position, it seemed he had made an effort to open the door, but failed, and fell back on the bed. The jury of inquest reported, that their death was caused by suffocation."

I thought I would stay in, and maybe I would not get cold,- and I haven’t.- Now about the other questions you asked,- as I understand it, if I remember, two brothers by the name of Winslow, came over in the “Mayflower.” One was Edward Winslow, who was the first Governor of Massachusetts. The other was Kenelm Winslow, and it is from him that we are descended. At the time that Elwin Hovey looked it up in Chicago Ill.- several years ago, we were the 8th generation from Kenelm Winslow, but whether it was the 8th to him or to his mother, I do not know. If it was to his mother,- you would be the 10th generation.

The Winslow who was asphyxiated by gas,- (caused by sleeping in a newly plastered room) was my grand-father.- your great-great grand-father, and it was probably in 1804. It was in the town of Bridgewater, Mass.- His name was Josiah Winslow. I cannot tell you much about the Montgomery’s,- as I never learned much about them. My father,- Ira Montgomery, was one of 7 brothers. His brother, Sereno8, was the grandfather of Mrs. Gutson Borglum,- she was Mary Montgomery.- Her father,- Giles Montgomery, was a Missionary to Turkey in Asia, for many years.- She and her brothers were born there, but as soon as they were old enough to be sent away to school,- they were sent to this country to be educated. Well, I hope that I have made plain, what I have tried to tell. If there is anything you do not understand, let me know and I will “rack my brain” for more details.
