Simon Ebenezer Washburn, born about 1794*, was the sixth of the nine children of Loyalists Ebenezer Washburn and Sarah De Forest.[1] He was a lawyer, an alderman in Toronto and the clerk of the peace for the Home District.[2]
During the War of 1812, he served as lieutenant with Captain John Stinson's Troop of Dragoons (mounted unit), 1st Regiment of Prince Edward Militia.[4]
Early Toronto residents remembered Simon Washburn for the monocle he wore and for his love of skating: "Skating in those days was not a very common pastime, but Mr. Washburn was a devoted admirer of the sport, and almost every fine afternoon during the season his portly form might be seen on the way to the bay with skates on arm."[5]
