Richard Nugent was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Biography

Richard Nugent, later 15th Baron Delvin and 1st Earl of Westmeath was born in 1583, son of Christopher Nugent and his wife Lady Mary Fitzgerald daughter of Gerald Fitzgerald 11th. Earl of Kildare. [1]

He was a Catholic.

Richard married Jane Plunkett, dau of Christopher Plunket, 9th Lord Killeen and his wife Genet Dillion.

1602 Inherited on death of his father, and in 1603 he was knighted at Dublin by the Earl of Tyrone. [2] & [1]

Mabel Browne, Dowager Countess of Kildare, wrote to Lord Salisbury expressing her sorrow that the late great treasons should have been plotted at Maynooth, and strongly asserted her own innocence. Namely that in 1606 Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone and Rory O'Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnel, who had married her grand-daughter Lady Bridget Fitzgerald, unknown to the Countess, and in the Castle garden proposed to Richard Lord Delvin, her grandson to take part in a general insurrection. In 1607 he was imprisoned at Dublin Castle as an accomplice of the Earl of Tyrconnel. He escaped to Cloughoughter Castle, co Cavan, and submitted to the King in 1608 and pardoned. He received large grants of land in many Irish counties 1611 [4] & [5]

On 4 Sep 1621 He was created Earl of Westmeath. [6]

In 1626 he travelled to London together with Sir John Barthe to gain financial concessions from Charles 1st. and in 1627 he joined the Duke of Buckingham on the ill fated expedition to the Ile de Ré. [4]

He refused to join the Rebellion of 1641 and was ambushed by Irish rebels near Athboy Co. Meath, dying shortly thereafter. He was buried at Clonyn. and suceeded by his grandson Richard as his eldest son Christopher had pre-deceased him [4] & [1]
