Obituary
DEATH OF THE REV. EDWARD EYRE MAUNSELL.—The hand of death has this year deprived Galway of many of its leading and most honoured men. To-day it is our sad duty to record the death of the Rev. Edward Eyre Maunsell, whose lamented demise took place at his residence, Fort Eyre, near this city, on Saturday last, at half-past nine o'clock in the evening. On Wednesday, at twelve o'clock, his remains were interred in the Eyre Maunsell family vault in the Collegiate Church at St Nicholas. The funeral was one of the largest we have seen in Galway for some time. It was attended by nearly all our local gentry and the clergy of all denominations. the Rev. Mr Eyre Maunsell was a man universally esteemed by the people of Galway. Throughout a long and honoured life he was a great benefactor to the poor and a kind and liberal employer. This was very well evidenced to-day by the tearful gratitude of the large multitude who assembled to pay the last affectionate tribute to his memory. The deceased gentleman was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. He was a distinguished student, and obtained the degree of A.M. He first entered the legal profession, and was a successful solicitor; but being a man of retiring habits, and piously disposed, he abandoned laws and became a minister for the Established Church. He was ordained in 1829. He was for several years one of the vicars of Glaway, but on the death of the late lamented Warden Daly succeeded to the incumbency of Oranmore and Ballinacourty. He enjoyed the esteem and respect of his Catholic neighbours, and is as much regretted by them as by the members of the his own flock. The reverend deceased was son of the Very Rev. George Maunsell, Dean of Leighlin, and nephew of the late Hedges Eyre, of Macroom Castle, county of Cork. He was first cousin of the Earl of Bantry, and was connected with the families of the Earl of Listowel, Lord Gough, Lord Massey, Lord Berehaven, and many of the leading families of Ireland. During the funeral to-day the principal shops of the town were closed, as all were anxious to testify their regard for the virtues and memory of the deceased. The chief mourners on the melancholy occasions were his sons, Edward Eyre Maunsell, Esq., J.P., Captain G. W. Maunsell, and the venerable Archdeacon of Clonfert. The Rev. Edward Eyre Maunsel had reached the patriarchal age of 76 years, and has left behind him a name which will be long remembered with affection and gratitude by his neighbours and acquaintances, and especially by the poor in the vicinity of Fort Eyre. - Galway Vindicator.[5]
His will was proved on 23 April 1864 at Tuam by the oath of Edward Eyre Maunsell, of Fort Eyre, Esquire, the sole Executor. Effects under £1,000.[6]
